Cable Exhibition 2024 Flash News: Expanding Community Solar Program, Launching a 30-Acre Solar Project

Consumers Energy plans to break ground next spring in Jackson County. Cable Exhibition 2024 has learned that the plan involves constructing a 30-acre community solar array as part of the Solar Gardens program, offering clean energy to customers.

This week, Consumers Energy received approval from Blackman Township for the community solar project, which is slated to start generating electricity by the end of 2025.

David, Vice President of Renewable Energy Development at Consumers Energy, stated, “We appreciate the reception from the leadership of Blackman Township and are excited to continue developing such projects. Blackman Solar is an excellent example of a project developed in partnership with the community, providing reliable clean energy as well as local tax and economic benefits.”

Blackman Solar will generate electricity for Consumers Energy’s Solar Gardens program, where customers opt into supporting new solar projects without needing to own solar panels.

Cable Exhibition 2024 understands that the new community solar facility will be the fourth such facility owned and operated by Consumers Energy. Blackman Solar will feature nearly 5,000 solar panels and will provide up to 2.5 megawatts of renewable power to 2,500 future Solar Gardens customers.

Consumers Energy plans to retire its last three coal-fired units next summer, and the company is developing solar projects as part of its clean energy plan to achieve carbon neutrality by 2040.

Consumers Energy’s clean energy plan calls for phasing out coal by 2025 to achieve net-zero carbon emissions, relying on clean sources such as wind and solar to meet the energy needs of 90% of its customers.
