Optical Fiber Cable Trade Fair 2024 Briefing - Saudi Arabia to Build High-Voltage Smart Grid
Saudi Arabia's electricity company has announced a blueprint for a high-voltage smart grid planned for NEOM, a new city being developed in Tabuk Province in the northwest of Saudi Arabia. The total planned area for NEOM is 26,500 square kilometers, with an anticipated population of 9 to 10 million residents. Optical Fiber Cable Trade Fair 2024 has learned that upon completion, the project is expected to provide 100% renewable energy to the NEOM region.
A relevant official stated that the plan marks a significant achievement in the field of energy transition. This concept, which has never been built before, can be referred to as a high-voltage microgrid. It can reduce the land area required by over 50%, and at the same time, the cost of underground equipment can also be reduced by more than 50%.
The official also mentioned, "In principle, what we are doing is not complicated. It is the scale that makes it complex." In other words, the deployment of smaller-scale smart grids is not difficult; the technical challenges lie in large-scale applications.
"As for the current infrastructure, approximately 5% has been completed, and it is expected to grow to 10% within the next 12 to 18 months. This is because NEOM will eventually become a large-scale project, and the infrastructure will be built as NEOM develops."
Optical Fiber Cable Trade Fair 2024 has learned that the system is expected to be operational by 2025. The energy generated by the project will not only be used locally but also for export, for instance, to provide fuel for electric vehicles.
