Eletronet chooses Ciena pocket optical platform to enhance backbone services

Currently one of the largest providers of connectivity to ISPs in the Brazilian market, Eletronet supplies high-speed data transport over its fibre optic network backbone, which consists of more than 16,000 kilometres across Brazil’s 18 states. The backbone is implanted almost entirely in optical ground wire (OPGW) optical cables, therefore using the infrastructure of the power transmission lines, to provide low failure rate and high reliability rates.

As part of the country’s modernisation project, the carrier aims to provide connectivity to all communities it serves and, enabled by the high-performance capacity of a 100G network that scales to 250G, it hopes to be able to deliver flexible and reliable high-bandwidth, multi-site connectivity and bundled internet protocol services to its customers across Brazil. Customers will also be supported in the deployment of future services such as virtualisation and software-defined networking (SDN) applications.

Ciena’s 6500 packet-optical platform will allow Eletronet to reach up to 22Tb/s of capacity, enabling the delivery of up to 10 GbE as well as 100 GbE wavelengths to transport larger amounts of data across longer distances. Anderson Jacopetti, chief technology officer at Eletronet said of the agreement: ‘As we thought about what we wanted a 100G network to achieve, it was key to provide both the lowest network latency on the market as well as establish direct routes to customers that would allow for rapid activation of services. By tapping Ciena’s expertise in the converged packet-optical industry, our network has become more agile, enabling us to expand connectivity further throughout Brazil.’

Fabio Medina, vice president and general manager of CALA at Ciena added: ‘Ciena’s packet-optical technology lays the foundation for Eletronet’s nationwide 100G network. This provides the cornerstone of an adaptive network that can proactively respond to changes in the network environment.’

In other recent news, Eletronet selected Seaborn Networks’ international submarine fibre-optic cable system, Seabras-1, to provide Tier 1 dedicated internet access across Brazil.
