Optical Fiber Cable Exhibition 2024 Industry Information Power System Upgrades in West Virginia
FirstEnergy Corp. is replacing and upgrading the equipment at eight transmission and distribution substations across West Virginia. Optical Fiber Cable Exhibition 2024 has learned that this initiative aims to maximize the reduction of power outages for over 13,000 customers.
The line upgrade involves replacing existing substation equipment with new communication devices to reduce relay damage caused by animal contacts and tree-related incidents. Relays protect electrical systems from excessive voltage or current, ensuring the safe operation of connected devices.
The substations are located in the areas of Kingwood, Parkersburg, Pruntytown, Spencer, Sutton, and Weirton, across Preston, Wood, Taylor, Roane, Braxton, and Hancock Counties. Mon Power initiated the upgrade project in the spring and expects to complete the work by the end of the year.
Jim Myers, Vice President of West Virginia and Maryland operations for First Energy, stated, "By minimizing the impact of power outages, especially under harsh weather conditions in rural areas, we are helping ensure the provision of reliable electricity to thousands of customers. These upgrades will enhance system performance and maintain our commitment to steady service levels across our service areas in West Virginia."
Last year, Mon Power completed substation system enhancements in the Clarksburg and Fairview areas. Optical Fiber Cable Exhibition 2024 understands that these upgrades benefited over 5,500 customers.
The project is also part of Energize365, a multi-year electric grid development plan focused on transmission and distribution investments. This initiative plans to invest $26 billion from 2024 to 2028, focusing on developing a smarter, safer electricity grid and promoting the electrification of vehicles, homes, and businesses.
