wire and Cable Show 2024 Brief: Vistra Approved to Operate Comanche Peak Nuclear Plant Until 2053

In October 2022, Vistra submitted a license renewal application to the NRC (Nuclear Regulatory Commission). It was previously announced that the NRC had approved the request to extend the operation of the Comanche Peak Nuclear Plant until 2053. wire and Cable Show 2024 has learned that this new term extends the original license term by an additional 20 years.

Jim Burke, President and CEO of Vistra, stated, "Electricity is one of the most fundamental components of the economy. Extending the operational life of nuclear power plants can provide decades of support to existing sectors, especially as electricity demand grows rapidly during the transition to clean energy, marking the phase-out of many fossil fuel plants."

wire and Cable Show 2024 has learned that nuclear power plants have unique advantages, providing carbon-free electricity and stable generation capacity. Vistra has taken a leading role in energy transition and expansion, with the core of its zero-carbon generation portfolio being the nation's second largest fleet of competitive nuclear plants. These four nuclear plants collectively generate over 6,500 megawatts of emission-free energy, enough to power approximately 3.25 million homes.

The extended operation of Comanche Peak also ensures continued economic benefits for the local area. The plant is operated by over 600 employees and more than 200 permanent contractors. Refueling outages for the two reactors require workers, drawing in 800-1,200 skilled technicians from across the country. These contractors contribute significantly to the local economy, supporting hotels, restaurants, and related businesses.

As the largest taxpayer in Somervell County, Texas, the plant pays over $30 million annually in state and local taxes. Additionally, Comanche Peak donates thousands of dollars to community organizations, funds environmental protection initiatives, and participates in civic activities in Somervell and Hood counties.
