Industry Newsletter for Cable Show 2024: Investment in Grid Maintenance
Due to the impacts of climate change and the rapid increase in electricity demand, partial discharges in cables are occurring more frequently, necessitating regular maintenance of the power grid to ensure its availability during peak usage periods. Cable Show 2024 has learned that the International Energy Agency (IEA) also highlighted in its report released in October that the power grid is becoming a bottleneck in the clean energy transition. The role of the grid in energy transformation is of paramount importance.
To break through technological barriers, renewable energy remains the most competitive means of energy production. Following the energy crisis in 2022, the demand for independent energy storage devices has begun to climb.
Many people now need a "giant battery" that can ensure energy supply for production and daily life activities, regardless of extreme weather conditions.
However, the current power grid is insufficient to achieve this vision. To reach such an ideal scenario, more advanced digital management methods and energy transmission interfaces are required.
Between 2024 and 2026, some groups plan to invest €35.8 billion (approximately $38.96 billion) by 2026, with nearly €19 billion expected to be allocated for the digitalization of the grid, improvement of equipment quality, operational safety, and the addition of new energy interfaces.
Cable Show 2024 has learned that at the Enlit Europe conference in Paris, grid directors from related industries expressed during their exchange with peers that they view investing in grid upgrades as akin to maintaining personal health. Just as people have dietary needs, failing to invest in grid maintenance will lead to the accumulation of issues akin to rising cholesterol levels, which can deteriorate health and eventually result in major problems.
Without timely maintenance to keep the grid in good condition, extreme weather can easily damage it, leading to power outages.
In Italy, several instances of grid instability due to heatwaves have already occurred. In July this year, Sicily experienced power outages due to rampant wildfires.
For companies responsible for operating this infrastructure, restoring power quickly is an immense task. Ensuring the safety of workers and the public during maintenance is also a significant challenge, making maintenance costs an indispensable expense for public utility companies.
