Wire and Cable Trade Fair 2024 Bulletin: Evolution of Smart Distribution Grids
The concept of smart distribution grids originated in the 1960s when computer technology began to be applied in power systems. However, Wire and Cable Trade Fair 2024 has learned that a significant phase in the development of smart grids emerged in the early 21st century. This was driven by the rapid rise of distributed energy sources (including distributed generation and storage), which highlighted technical and economic issues related to grid integration, alongside advancements in various smart devices.
Although traditional power grids have provided stable electricity supply for our lives, they have some unavoidable shortcomings. For instance, faults can lead to widespread outages; additionally, fault localization is difficult, and power restoration takes a long time.
In contrast, smart grids exhibit significant advantages. Firstly, smart grids have self-healing capabilities, allowing for timely detection and repair of faults, thereby reducing the impact on users. Secondly, they offer higher quality power by monitoring and controlling power quality in real time to meet user demands. Smart grids also enable interaction with users, allowing them to choose their electricity usage periods via smart meters, thereby saving on electricity costs. For users with distributed energy sources, smart grids allow them to feed electricity back into the grid during peak demand periods. Lastly, smart grids improve operational efficiency by monitoring equipment status in real time and optimizing power flow distribution, thus reducing line losses.
Wire and Cable Trade Fair 2024 has learned that globally, smart grids have been extensively researched and applied in many countries and regions. For example, the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) in the United States established the "Intelli Grid" alliance to conduct research on modern smart grids; the Italian electricity company invested heavily in a smart metering project, successfully reducing peak loads and saving investments. The French electricity company also adopts smart grids as a design guideline for its distribution automation system retrofits. Meanwhile, the European Union established the "Smart Grid Technology Forum" in 2005 to further promote smart grid development.
With continuous technological advancements, the application and development of smart grids will have a profound impact on global power supply, bringing greater convenience and security to our lives.
