Cable Trade Fair 2024 News Flash: The Transformation from Traditional Grid to Smart Grid
The distribution network is central to the power industry, connecting all segments of the electricity sector and enabling the delivery of electricity to homes and businesses. Without the distribution network, power transmission would be impossible. As technology advances, grid reform is gradually taking place. Cable Trade Fair 2024 has learned that the UK has 14 Ofgem-recognized distribution networks, belonging to six major groups, responsible for supplying electricity to different regions.
In certain projects, some qualified companies can also bid fairly.
The UK grid reform is gradually moving towards decentralization, meaning that the structure and operation of the power system are changing. The prior centralized model, dominated by large power plants with one-way electricity flow from high voltage to low voltage, is shifting to a new model where various sizes of generation equipment coexist, and distributed energy resources are integrated at the distribution network voltage level, allowing for two-way electricity transmission.
Decentralized grids are significant because they can fully utilize distributed energy resources and various intelligent monitoring systems to increase electricity usage efficiency, and improve the flexibility and stability of the power system.
Cable Trade Fair 2024 has learned that compared to traditional grids, smart grids offer greater flexibility and adaptability due to multi-directional feedback with users and the national grid. This enhances the stability and efficiency of the distribution network, providing users with more convenient services.
As more distributed energy resources are integrated, the UK grid is transitioning from DNO (Distribution Network Operator) to DSO (Distribution System Operator). In the new system, all components need to interact to maintain normal operation. The distribution network will become more vibrant, proactive, and coordinated to accommodate the growing electricity market. The reform of the UK grid transforms it into more than just a transmitter of electrical energy.
