Wire Exhibition 2024 Brief: Simplifying Ethernet Connectivity from Sensors to the Cloud
To harness the benefits of the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), manufacturers need smooth and seamless communication across all levels of automation. Wire Exhibition 2024 has learned that Ethernet has long been the communication standard at the control level, but bus systems have not kept pace with development, limiting the potential data flow.
By implementing cost-effective and space-saving infrastructure, non-Ethernet field devices can also communicate within Ethernet networks.
Limitations of Traditional Network Technologies
Currently, manufacturers typically rely on bus networks to facilitate data flow from field devices. PROFIBUS, one of the most prevalent bus communication methods in automation technology, is a serial field bus technology established over 30 years ago, utilizing a pair of cored wires in the bus cable.
Advantages of modern network technology
As the industry transitioned from bus to industrial Ethernet, both at the control and enterprise levels, PROFIBUS and PROFINET International (PI) developed PROFINET. This industrial Ethernet protocol transmits Ethernet at a rate of 100 megabits per second (Mbps) using two pairs of cores.
Wire Exhibition 2024 has learned that some manufacturing enterprises even use Gigabit Ethernet (GB Ethernet), which requires four pairs of cores but can achieve data transmission rates of one gigabit per second or 1 GB.
Another challenge is the issue of complex connections. To bridge the communication gap between field devices (bus) and all devices above them (Ethernet), manufacturers must install converters and gateways.
Single Pair Ethernet (SPE) is the physical layer of industrial Ethernet. It combines high data rates with lightweight cable design, simplifying communication across automation levels.
