Wire and Cable Trade Fair 2024 Industry News - Saudi High Voltage Smart Grid Construction Underway
The national electricity company of Saudi Arabia has announced a blueprint for the construction of a high voltage smart grid, planned for NEOM, a new region being developed in the northwestern province of Tabuk, Saudi Arabia. With a total planned area of 26,500 square kilometers and a projected population of 9 to 10 million, Wire and Cable Trade Fair 2024 has learned that upon completion, the project is expected to supply 100% renewable energy to the region of NEOM.
A representative of the project stated that the plan marks a significant achievement in the field of energy transformation. It can be referred to as a concept of a high voltage level microgrid network that has never been built before in the world. It could reduce the land footprint by more than 50%, and at the same time, the cost of subterranean equipment installation could also be saved by over 50%.
The representative added, "Considering what we are doing is not complicated in principle. It's the scale that makes it complex." This means that deploying smart grids on a smaller scale is not difficult; the technical challenge lies in their application on a large scale.
"With regard to the current infrastructure, about 5% has been completed, and this is expected to grow to 10% in the next 12 to 18 months. This is because NEOM is set to be a major project, and the development of infrastructure will progress along with the growth of NEOM.
The Wire and Cable Trade Fair 2024 understands that the system is expected to be operational by 2025. The energy generated from the project will be used locally, as well as exported, for example, to provide fuel for new energy vehicles.
