Van Oord, Hellenic Get Cables Contract For 700-MW Dutch Offshore Link

Tennet Holding BV has awarded a consortium made up of Van Oord and Hellenic Cables the contract to deliver the cables for the 700-MW Hollandse Kust (South) Alpha offshore grid connection project in the Netherlands.  


The grid connection will link to the mainland the two wind farms that are currently under construction in the Hollandse Kust (South) wind farm zone in Dutch waters, transmission system operator (TSO) Tennet announced.


The team of Van Oord Offshore Wind Projects BV and Hellenic Cables SA will design, manufacture and install the 220-kV subsea and onshore cables for the project and connect them to the Maasvlakte high-voltage substation. The length of the link from the onshore substation to the Hollandse Kust (South) Alpha offshore platform is about 42 km (26 miles). Two 220-kV subsea cables of 350 MW each will be used.


In addition, the consortium is the preferred contractor to deliver and install cables for the Hollandse Kust (South) Beta sea cables project. This includes manufacturing and laying a 66-kV marine cable between the Alpha and Beta platforms.


The Hollandse Kust (South) Alpha grid connection is due to be completed by 2021, and the Beta is to be ready in 2022.


"Tennet, and therefore the Netherlands as a whole, is well on track to realize 3.5 gigawatts of additional offshore wind farms, increasing the total offshore capacity to approx. 4.5 gigawatts by 2023," said Tennet chief executive Manon van Beek. The TSO is developing the 3.5 GW of offshore connections using a standardised concept and each link will have a capacity of 700 MW.


The tender for the subsea cables and platforms for the Hollandse Kust (North) offshore grid project will kick off towards the end of this year.


Tennet further announced that LMR Drilling GmbH has been selected to take care of the horizontal directional drilling of four pipeline sections as part of the Hollandse Kust (South) Alpha project.
