Cable Exhibition 2024 Industry News - Vehicle-to-Grid Moves Towards the Perfect Intersection in Energy

Bidirectional charging—where electric vehicles charge from the grid and later release surplus electricity, Cable Exhibition 2024 finds that this model, whether it returns power to the grid, supplies homes, or even other electric vehicles—has garnered significant attention. So, what role does bidirectional charging play in the energy industry?

Bidirectional charging is applicable to Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) systems, which have recently been propelled by numerous pilot projects as a consumptive management asset and have become a popular concept for addressing grid congestion issues.

Industry professional Frenkel believes that V2G technology is one of the latest perfect accessories within the energy transition conundrum. When asked about the rapid emergence of V2G, Frenkel cited the Netherlands as a case study, stating, "There's more public infrastructure, and even home charging is more convenient." However, the energy issues with these new electric vehicles also bring new challenges to grid management, and an overloaded power supply adds to grid strain.

"In the Netherlands, the electricity consumed by each EV is equivalent to the annual electricity usage of an entire household. If a family has two electric vehicles, the power consumption will be even greater. In reality, it's really challenging for the existing infrastructure to cope with such situations."

This information considers the domestic aspect. Considering commercial and industrial-scale charging, like large electric vehicle parking lots, the electrical system operates over its capacity, potentially leading to accidents, not to mention the burden from renewable energy sources.

  • Dutch Grid at Limit

Power generation increases with the surplus capacity of renewable energy. The current difficulty lies in the absence of batteries to store this surplus energy, but aren't electric vehicles essentially batteries on wheels?

This is the concept of V2G. By treating electric vehicles as batteries on wheels that can freely charge and discharge, V2G views them as part of the energy revolution rather than a cumbersome burden.

  • The Perfect Intersection

Cable Exhibition 2024 understands that V2G has become a consensus in the entire industry and has received endorsement from Raphael Héliot, policy manager at the European Association for Electromobility (AVERE).

Héliot believes that the role of V2G can be seen as the perfect intersection between transport and energy, serving as a catalyst for renewable electricity to enter the grid and enhance grid load. It also bridges transport and energy, in a sense combining the strengths of both, improving grid capacity, encouraging EV development, and stimulating the economy.

He also stated that the technology is ready; the challenge lies in expanding and integrating it into Europe’s grid system, not just as small-scale experimental projects.

Despite the significance of this matter, related measures are gradually being implemented. Héliot believes that it is crucial to ensure all legislation is compatible to accelerate the promotion of renewable energy and achieve the goal of reducing carbon emissions from road traffic.
